So, what does the SDS for Dakin’s Solution look like?

Well, Dakin’s Solution is a drug product under FDA regulations, therefore a safety data sheet is not required per the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As you can see in our substitute, any drug, as that term is defined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act is exempt from OSHA’s Hazardous Communication Standard requirements, including a Safety Data Sheet. However, there are still necessary precautions one should take when using Dakin’s Solution to treat a wound.

If redness, irritation, swelling or pain persists or increases while using the solution, stop using Dakin’s and call a doctor immediately. If you are sensitive to chlorine compounds, do not use Dakin’s Solution. The active ingredient in Dakin’s Solution is sodium hypochlorite which is also an active ingredient in bleach. This product should be kept out of reach of children. If swallowed, it is important that you seek medical assistance or contact a Poison Control center immediately. If the product finds its way into your eyes, it is recommended that you flush your open eyes right away with clean water for 15 minutes

There are several ways to flush out your eyes, but the most common method is to bend over a sink and turn the faucet on. It is important to keep your eye area under the running water while tilting your head to the side. This may cause some discomfort, but it will not be as uncomfortable as leaving the problem untreated.

With proper use, Dakin’s Solution is an effective wound cleanser that can be used to disinfect all types of acute and chronic wounds. It is still important that you follow all directions given to you by your doctor prior to using Dakin’s Solution. If you find yourself in any discomfort while using the solution, it is important that you seek help from a medical professional immediately and discontinue use of the solution.
