Looking for the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Dakin’s Solution? You can find it here.
A Safety Data Sheet is a document that contains information about the possible adverse effects of exposure to chemicals, active and inactive ingredients, and potentially dangerous substances. These highly regulated documents give individuals essential health and safety information that might not be provided by a doctor or other physician.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines exactly what information must be included in a Safety Data Sheet. These requirements are called the Hazardous Communication Standards, and they’re mandatory for many substance producers.
A typical Safety Data Sheet includes a few key pieces of information
Depending on the product, most Safety Data Sheets contain information about:
- Product ingredients
- Any hazard materials included in the product
- The the ratio or concentration of key chemicals included in the product
- First-aid measures, including when to seek medical help or contact a poison control center
- The toxicology of the product
This information is intended to help individuals make educated choices about the products they purchase, and keep individuals safe when using and disposing of these products.
Dakin’s Solution is not required to have a safety data sheet. Here’s why:
If you take a look at the Dakin’s Solution Safety Data Sheet substitute, you’ll notice it looks a little different than the OSHA Hazardous Communication Standard requirements described above. That’s because Dakin’s Solution is considered a drug product under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Under this act, any substances defined as a “drug” are exempt from OSHA’s communication requirement.
However, there are still important precautions you should take when using Dakin’s Solution for wound care or chronic wounds.

If redness, irritation, swelling, or pain persists or increases while using the solution, stop your Dakin’s treatment and call a doctor immediately.
If you are sensitive to chlorine compounds, do not use Dakin’s Solution, as allergic reactions may occur. The active ingredient in Dakin’s Solution is sodium hypochlorite, which is also an active ingredient in bleach. It is strongly recommended to review the Dakin’s Solution product label, and follow it closely, for the best wound management results.
Additional safety recommendations for the proper use of Dakin’s Solution
This product should be kept out of reach of children. If swallowed, it’s important that you seek medical assistance or contact a Poison Control center immediately. If the product comes into contact with your eyes, it is recommended that you flush your open eyes right away with clean water for 15 minutes.
How to properly flush your eyes: There are several ways to flush out your eyes, but the most common method is to bend over a sink and turn the faucet on. Tilt your head below the gently running faucet, and allow warm water to cleanse your eyes for up to 15 minutes. It’s important to keep your entire eye area, including the eyelids, under the running water while tilting your head to the side. This may cause some discomfort, but will effectively remove the substance from your eye area. Avoid rubbing your eyes until the cleansing process is complete.
With proper use, Dakin’s Solution is an effective wound cleanser that can be used to disinfect all types of acute and chronic wounds
Dakin’s multiple wound care formulations are designed to be tough on bacteria, viruses, mold, yeast, and more, but gentle on skin and healing tissue. Unlike alcohol-based solutions and hydrogen peroxide, Dakin’s Solutions use sodium bicarbonate as a buffering agent—creating a powerful, but non-irritating sodium hypochlorite solution shown to be effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms and biofilm.
In an independent study of wound care solutions, Dakin’s Solutions effectively killed at least 99.99999% of MRSA and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) in only 30 seconds. Despite its bacteria-fighting abilities, Dakin’s Solutions remain non-sensitizing, safe, and antibiotic-free.
