What is Dakin’s Solution?

It’s a sodium hypochlorite-based solution that’s highly stable and proven effective, especially when paired with supporting therapies, like sharp debridement and NPWT with instillation.

Dakin’s Solution is a carefully buffered antimicrobial agent, formulated to maintain a pH that’s both safe for tissue and effective against microbes. It also comes in multiple concentrations, so clinicians can practice a step therapy approach to both simple and complex wound care.

Depending on the strength, Dakin’s can be used as a:

• Chemical debriding agent to help remove necrotic tissue and control infection
• Mechanical debriding agent in wet-to-dry dressings
• Dressing soak in wet-to-moist applications where continuous antimicrobial action is needed
• Wound irrigation solution to rinse away debris, foreign material, and biofilm-forming bacteria
• Instill-dwell solution in NPWTi to continuously sanitize deep wound cavities

Dakin’s Solution Ingredients

The main ingredients in Dakin’s Solution are sodium hypochlorite and sodium bicarbonate.

Dakin’s Solution contains a safe, medical-grade, low concentration of sodium hypochlorite. When it comes into contact with tissue, it becomes hypochlorous acid, then attacks the present bacteria through membrane penetration, protein disruption, and genetic shutdown. Not only does the sodium hypochlorite formulation kill bacteria, the chemical debridement mechanism helps remove biofilm—even when the protective film is formed by antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.

Dakin’s Solution uses sodium bicarbonate as a buffer to help maintain stability, which keeps Dakin’s potent for two years (or one year for Dakin’s Full Strength, 0.5%).

In fact, in a study comparing the stability of Vashe to Dakin’s 0.0125% strength, the results showed that Dakin’s is much more stable than Vashe, especially after opening.

The biggest differences between Vashe and Dakin’s Solution are the pH and stability.

At a pH of 3.5-5.5, Vashe is an effective germicide. But healthy tissue has a pH of around 7.3, while chronic wounds tend to be more alkaline, in the 7.4-8.9 range. When hypochlorous acid is applied in these settings, the difference in pH, combined with exposure to air and light, can destabilize the solution and reduce its antimicrobial effectiveness.

Buffered sodium hypochlorite products like Dakin’s are formulated with a pH between 9.7 and 10—optimized for solution stability, but still safe for use on wounds.

HOCl products often highlight their gentleness, but they can also be unstable and require tight pH control to remain effective. Dakin’s is specially formulated to deliver the right chemistry for antimicrobial action—without sacrificing wound compatibility.

Dakin’s Solution Side Effects

In the right concentration, Dakin’s is powerful against bacteria and safe for healing tissue.

Higher concentrations of Dakin’s (like Full Strength, 0.5%) are highly bactericidal and ideal for heavily contaminated wounds or severely infected chronic wounds. The higher strength reduces odor and targets bioburden with mechanical and chemical debriding action.

Lower concentrations of Dakin’s (like Wound Cleanser (0.0125%) and Wound Cleanser Pro (0.125%)) are non-irritating, non-sensitizing, non-stinging, and don’t inhibit wound healing.

Dakin’s is a topical solution that doesn’t trigger systemic side effects, so it can be used alongside supporting therapies, like debridement and NPWT with instillation. 

Concentration is the key to effective care

At the right concentration, both Dakin’s Solution and Vashe protect tissue integrity with limited side effects and no antibiotics, alcohols, or steroids. The difference is that Dakin’s allows clinicians to match concentration to use case, balancing gentle cleansing with effective antimicrobial activity to rinse away debris and target infection-causing bacteria. 

Dakin’s Primary Action

Unlike saline or pure hypochlorous acid, Dakin’s Full Strength acts as a mechanical debrider and oxidizing agent that denatures proteins in non-viable tissue.

This “chemical digestion” helps separate dead tissue from living tissue more actively than a standard cleanser. It’s often used in mechanical debridement (including wet-to-dry dressings), where the physical removal of the dried gauze pulls away the debris that the solution has helped loosen, but its chemical debriding properties make it useful in caring for heavily infected, necrotic wounds that need a stronger approach than hypochlorous acid.

Higher concentrations of Dakin’s (like Dakin’s Full Strength, 0.5%) are useful for getting heavily infected wounds under control, while more gentle strengths (like Dakin’s Wound Cleanser (0.0125%) and Wound Cleanser Pro (0.125%)) help clean, irrigate, and maintain moisture in healing tissue.
